Nycomed’s US partner Forest Laboratories responds to FDA complete response letter for Roflumilast (Daxas®)

13.09.2010

Nycomed today announced that its US partner Forest Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: FRX) has filed a response to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) addressing topics raised in the complete response letter regarding the New Drug Application (NDA) for roflumilast (Daxas®). The FDA has acknowledged receipt of the resubmission and considers it a complete, class 2 response to their May 17, 2010 complete response letter, which requested certain additional information and analyses of existing data. No additional patient trials were requested.

Roflumilast is being reviewed as a potential treatment to reduce chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations associated with chronic bronchitis in patients at risk for exacerbations. Nycomed and Forest expect a response from the FDA in the first quarter of calendar year 2011.

In early July, Nycomed received marketing authorisation for Daxas® (roflumilast) in the EU. Daxas® is indicated for maintenance treatment of severe COPD (FEV1 post-bronchodilator less than 50% predicted) associated with chronic bronchitis in adult patients with a history of frequent exacerbations as an add-on to bronchodilator treatment. It has been recently launched in Germany and will be launched in eight additional European countries and Canada by the end of this year.

About Daxas® (roflumilast)

Daxas® (roflumilast) is an orally administered selective phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) enzyme inhibitor, which has been shown to inhibit COPD related inflammation with a novel mode of action.  Daxas®, a once-a-day oral tablet, is the first drug in a new class of treatment for COPD and the first oral anti-inflammatory treatment for COPD patients. Other pharmacological treatment for COPD patients includes the use of inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids.

About COPD

COPD remains a significant area of unmet medical need. It is a progressive and irreversible lung disease resulting in difficulty in breathing. The disease is characterised by severe episodes of worsening, called exacerbations or lung attacks. According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, 80 million people have moderate to severe COPD worldwide. More than 3 million people died of COPD in 2005, which corresponds to 5% of all deaths globally. The WHO predicts that total deaths from COPD could increase by more than 30% in the next 10 years unless urgent action is taken to reduce the underlying risk factors, especially smoking.
